The festivals and annual events that mark the year in the Gila Valley.

The valley’s calendar runs on a few big traditions. Dates shift from year to year, so check the live calendar before you plan.

Winter

December brings Merry Main Street and the Light the World Giving Machine in Safford, where visitors buy donations of meals, clothing and livestock for people in need. The Gila Valley Balloon Extravaganza is a free hot air balloon rally with tethered rides for kids. In February the Matheson Music Festival fills the Graham County Fairgrounds with bluegrass, old-time and Americana.

Spring

The Safford Spring Festival, held the fourth weekend of April, is a two-day downtown celebration of local art, regional history and Arizona wine, with live music and vendors.

Summer

Pioneer Days runs in July with a carnival, live entertainment, rodeo events and fireworks. Hosting rotates among Safford, Thatcher and Pima, and Pima hosts in 2026. The Fourth of July is celebrated across the valley.

Fall

NatureSweet SalsaFest takes over downtown Safford the fourth weekend of September, with salsa competitions, a car show and live music. The Graham County Fair follows in early October at the fairgrounds, with livestock, carnival rides, a parade and talent shows. Veterans Day on November 11 brings a ceremony and parade.

All year

Mount Graham Observatory tours run on select Saturdays from late spring through October. Eastern Arizona College’s Fine Arts Auditorium hosts concerts, theater and lectures throughout the school year, and the downtown Safford Theatre has concerts and movies.
