East of Safford, the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area protects the stretch of the Gila River where it narrows between steep canyon walls — a rare mix of flowing water, cottonwood groves, and dramatic desert cliffs managed by the BLM. Hiking, primitive camping, and some of the best birdwatching in Southeastern Arizona draw visitors into a landscape that shifts from riverbank to open desert within a short walk. Fishing opportunities include channel catfish, largemouth bass, and native desert species, depending on seasonal river flow.
